(2017) Evonian names
Evonian names are names used by, or originating with, the Evon. Evonian names in the BHH Cycle differ from other naming systems by having three words rather than two and lacking in an inherited family name. The Evonian system was created by the government several hundred years after the Evonian Cycle, designed to be rational, and is not rooted in any human tradition. Generally, a person's middle name is the last name of their father (patronymic) or in some cases mother (matronymic), although often both mother and father will share a common last name.
Occasionally, two-word names are used by Evon in the BHH Cycle, most commonly descending ultimately from last name patronyms Evon took up when born in different countries. Notable Evon who have a non-Evon style family name include derata Lily E'lluna, born in Helltuna as the biological sister of Ro E'lluna but being transferred to Evonia, former High Council member Ida Starling, who chose to use a non-Evonian style name by not choosing a last name, and now-Olympan politician Mavis Olympia, who was born as an Evon in Olympa and used her Olympan family name in Evonia for 25 years before moving back to Olympa.
Inherited names[edit | edit source]
In the BHH Cycle, Evonian name inheritance system is unqiue to the Evon and sees the last name of a father (or mother) become their child's middle name. For example, a man named Eeadz Luach Uara has a son named Iax. Iax’s last name will be Uara like his father’s when he is first born, and upon reaching adulthood he will choose his own last name, with Uara becoming the middle name. His chosen last name will then be passed on to his children in the same fashion. In cases where two people in the same social circle bear the same three names, they have traditionally been distinguished by their paternal grandfather's last name (the father's middle name); e.g. Eeadz Luach Uara Teagwyn (where his father's middle and last names would have been Teagwyn and Luach).
